This really depends on what you are making, how large it is, what effect you want and if has to support additional weight and stresses.

This table will give you a starting point........

What You Are Making.... Common Gauge Used Other Gauges You Can Try
Ear Wires 22ga 20ga
Rings 16ga 14ga
Bracelets 18ga, 20ga 16ga, 14ga
Jump Rings 22ga, 20ga 18ga, 16ga, 14ga
Split Rings 22ga, 20ga 18ga, 16ga. 14ga
Catches 18ga 20ga, 16ga, 14ga

These are only a guideline. Have a play around and find out what works best for you. You may find that an 18ga bracelet is too heavy, so try using 20ga instead.

Remember to always use the practice wire before finalising your design in something more expensive. Craft wire (as well as Copper wire) is great for this. Just keep in mind that Gold Filled wire and Sterling Silver wire are heavier than craft wire and so may sit slightly differently in the finished product.

The name of the game is to have fun and design something new.
